From Chaco to Mesa Verde: Ancestral Pueblo Migrations and Identity Formation in the American Southwest

Join the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center for an extraordinary two-week National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute for (K-12) school teachers. July 17-30th, 2022

From Chaco to Mesa Verde: Ancestral Pueblo Migrations and Identity Formation in the American Southwest, a two-week summer Institute for 25 K-12 teachers, will be conducted by the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center from July 17th – 30th, 2022. This Institute highlights the factors leading up to, and following, the migrations of ancestral Pueblo people from their homelands in Chaco Canyon to the Mesa Verde region during the 12th century A.D. Utilizing a multivocal approach of both Western scientific and Native traditional knowledge, the goal of this Institute is to investigate human migrations as broad, socially-complex processes in order to further educate teachers, and subsequently students, on a topic that has been, and will always remain, relevant to humans in every society throughout the world in the past, present, and future.

Institute Highlights:

• Visit Chaco Culture National Historical Park, Aztec Ruins National Monument, and Mesa Verde National Park 
• Participate in Prehispanic archaeological data collection and analyses
• Interact and learn from Native scholars and professional archaeologists

You will investigate history through anthropology, archaeology, American Indian studies, ethnohistory, and oral history. Interpretations from the perspectives of both Pueblo scholars and Western scientists will be examined carefully to allow you to determine if and how the bodies of information are compatible, how multivocal interpretations of history may influence the understanding of human migrations, and how it is presented in today’s classrooms.
