Structure 514, subterranean room
About this Structure
Block 500, west of drainage; borders southwest end of plaza.
In courtyard area (Nonstructure 513), southwest of kiva (Structure 501). Below Arbitrary Units 519 and 520.
It is not clear what this small, subterranean room was used for. It contains no features; a few usable vessels, and a few stone tools were left on the floor at abandonment. This room could have been a work room, a storage room, or used for some other, special purpose. Access was apparently through the roof.
A few usable vessels and tools were left on the floor at abandonment, and additional usable items were found in roof fall. Thus, these usable items were neither taken by the residents nor scavenged by others. Also, no secondary refuse was found in the structure fill. Both of these circumstances suggest that abandonment of this structure and the kiva suite occurred at the same time that occupation of the village ended. Abandonment of the suite could have followed a ritual interment in Structure 501 (kiva), could have resulted from a warfare event, or from some other, unknown cause.
Roof and upper walls collapsed naturally, additional sediment was deposited by natural forces.
