Structure 304, masonry surface structure
About this Structure
Block 300, west of spring; borders east-northeast end of plaza.
Western edge of Block 300; south of Structure 303, west of Structure 305.
The absence of floor features, especially a hearth, suggests that this room was not used for habitation. The walls were not preserved to a great enough height to determine for certain whether any contained doorways, so it is not known whether entry was through a doorway or a roof hatchway. The few flakes and sherds found on the floor are not helpful in determining the use of the room. On the basis of lack of evidence to the contrary, mostly, this room is being labeled a storage room. This structure is not closely associated spatially with Structure 306 (kiva), but it nevertheless might have been part of Kiva Suite 306.
A small lens of ashy, secondary refuse was deposited on the floor, probably near the time of abandonment or just after. The use-associated contents of the room were apparently cleaned out either by the residents when the room was abandoned, or by others after the residents left. The abandonment appears to have been leisurely.
No roofing timbers were found in this room; the roofing material thus might have been salvaged for use elsewhere in the village.
No excavation details recorded for this study unit.
