Structure 1201, masonry surface structure

About this Structure

General Location

Block 1200, southeast quadrant of site, on cliff edge.

Specific Location

Southwest corner of excavated portion of Block 1200, south of Structure 1202, west of Structure 1207.

Interpretive Type

Storage room.

Structure Use

No artifacts or features were associated with the floor surface, and the floor was not plastered. The absence of a doorway in the three extant walls of this room indicates that access was through a roof hatchway. These characteristics, along with the small size of the room, lead to the inference that the room was not used for habitation, but rather for storage.

The absence of artifacts on the floor suggests a leisurely abandonment. The absence of culturally deposited refuse in the structure fill suggests that abandonment of this room occurred when the kiva suite was abandoned.

The roof and then upper walls of the room collapsed, the west wall appears to have fallen westward off the cliff. Additional sediment was deposited naturally.
