Structure 208, subterranean kiva

About this Structure

General Location

Central portion of site.

Specific Location

East-central portion of Block 200.

Interpretive Type

Living room.

Structure Use

Structure 208 is similar to other kivas occupied in the Pueblo III period and was probably used in a combination of domestic and ritual activities. A piece of sandstone with red pigment on it was in contact with the floor surface. This indicates that domestic activities were taking place within the structure.

Abandonment

This structure was abandoned in the late Pueblo III period. It was one of the last structures occupied immediately prior to regional abandonment. The roof was intentionally burned. The roof sediments collapsed on to the floor surface. Natural fill accumulated above the roof sediments. Structure 213, a possible shrine, was constructed on the natural fill within the depression of Structure 208.

Postabandonment

Natural fill accumulated above the roof sediments. Structure 213, a possible shrine, was constructed on the natural fill within the depression of Structure 208.
