Nonstructure 1.7-N, cultural deposit, type unknown

About this Nonstructure

No Surface
No Masonry

General Location

Lower west side; base of talus slope near canyon bottom.

Specific Location

Exposed near limits of excavation in Segments 3-5 and 10 (EU's 34, 35, 36 and 41); below Nonstructures 1.6-N, 1.8-N, 1.9-N, 1.10-N, and 1.23-N.

Selection Criteria

Part of Nonstructure 1-N testing; see Nonstructure 1-N and associated EU's for description and explanation of testing strategy.

Use

It is unclear if this is a natural, pre-occupational deposit with intrusive cultural material or a cultural deposit. The main argument for this being a natural, pre-occupational deposit with intrusive cultural material is that most of the artifacts came from the top of the deposit. The main argument for this being a cultural deposit is that charcoal flecks are present throughout the deposit. It is conceivable that the charcoal came from a natural forest fire that occurred before occupation, however, it is equally plausible that the charcoal is the result of cultural activity. If this is a cultural deposit, it may be constructional fill since it does not contain enough cultural material to be considered refuse.

Abandonment

Not applicable.

Postabandonment Process

Not applicable.

Dating of Construction

Based on pottery data, this deposit dates from the Pueblo III period. Based on stratigraphic position, this is an early deposit that predates three extramural surfaces (Nonstructures 1.6-N, 1.8-N, and 1.10-N) and two refuse deposits (Nonstructures 1.9-N and 1.23-N).
