Nonstructure 1.11-N, cultural deposit, type unknown
About this Nonstructure
Lower west side; base of talus slope near canyon bottom.
Upper fill of Segment 6 (EU 37); rests above Nonstructures 1.13-N, 1.14-N, and 1.15-N. Nonstructure 1.12-N rests in this deposit.
Part of Nonstructure 1-N testing; see Nonstructure 1-N and associated EU for description and explanation of testing strategy.
This is intepreted as a cultural deposit because of the random orientation of the inclusions, and the lack of sorting that is indicative of alluvial deposition. It contains few artifacts and therefore is not believed to be secondary refuse. It may be constructional fill, but it is not clear what was being constructed. An extramural surface (Nonstructure 1.12-N) was defined near the top of this deposit, because of the presence of a wall (Feature 11). It may be that fill was laid to create a constructional surface.
Dating of Construction
Pottery data indicate that this fill was deposited during the Pueblo III period. The stratigraphic position suggests that this deposit postdates an extramural surface (Nonstructure 1.13-N), a cultural deposit (Nonstructure 1.15-N), and a refuse deposit (Nonstructure 1.14-N).
