Structure 9-S, subterranean kiva

CONSTRUCTION

Method and Sequence

1) pit excavated into undistrubed native sediment; 2) a bench was created by leaving a shelf of undisturbed native sediment; bench was at least partly faced with masonry but upper lining wall was not; 3) kiva floor and bench surface might have been laid although no evidence of surface preparation was detected because of the limited exposure and the effects of erosion; kiva was roofed based on roof fall in kiva fill.
